It’s winter on Long Island, which means cold and snowy afternoons, and coming up with children’s activities outside of the house. One of our favorites and we hope it is one of yours; is ice skating. Long Island offers a number of rinks island wide, so depending on your location and your skating preference, choosing a venue should be fun. We have compiled a list of both indoor and outdoor ice skating rinks on Long Island.
Outdoor Rinks:
Tanger Outlets, located in Deer Park, the rink is located in the center of the outdoor outlet mall offering $4 skate rentals and $10 admission. Monday through Friday you can skate from 3pm-5:30pm and 6pm-9pm. Saturday you can skate from 11am-12pm, 2:30pm-5:30pm and 6pm-10pm. Sundays you can skate from 11am-2pm, 2:30pm-5:30pm and 6pm-9pm. Syosset-Woodbury Community Park, Jericho Turnpike, Syosset, has an outdoor ice skating rink, part of the Town of Oyster Bay Parks. The admission prices are as follows: under 2 years old skate for free; 2-4 year olds $2.00 (residents) $3.00 (non residents); 5-17 year olds are $4.00 (residents) $7.00 (non residents); 18 and over $5.00 (residents) $8.00 (non residents). The Rinx at Harborfront Park, Port Jefferson, through March, you can experience skating on the harbor with gorgeous views of the water in the heart of Port Jefferson Village.
Marjorie R. Post Community Park Ice Rink in Massapequa is another Town of Oyster Bay outdoor skating rink open to residents and non-residents alike. Buckskill Winter Club in East Hampton is an upscale facility Located just north of Montauk Highway. The venue offers public skating seven days a week. It’s pricier than many rinks but the amenities reflect the higher price, and skaters are welcome to stay all day and into the evening. There is a cafe with a fireplace, changing area, regular ice resurfacing, skate and helmet rentals, and balancing aids for novice skaters. For more details, visit http://www.buckskillwinterclub.com/.
Mitchell Park Ice Rink in Greenport also houses the village’s century-old carousel. This outdoor rink is on the waterfront and offers public skating sessions, skate rentals and lessons. Southampton Ice Rink in Southampton opened in 2014 and quickly became a South Fork winter destination. It is located adjacent to the Southampton mini-golf and driving range. Adding to it’s appeal is the fact that the rink is refrigerated so it can remain open when nearby ponds and rivers have melted so the season extends into April. Long Beach Municipal Ice Arena, Long Beach, is an indoor ice skating rink offering plenty of activities. They host birthday parties, offer a learn to skate program, and hockey leagues. Islanders Iceworks, Syosset, is the official practice facility of the New York Islanders. The arena is also the home ice to the PAL Junior Islanders and the Nassau County High School Hockey League. Dix Hills Park Ice Rink, Dix Hills, the indoor ice rink sets the tone for winter fun with its rustic feel and ski lodge motif. The rink offers a variety of activities including public skating sessions, figure skating, group skating lessons, private skating lessons, adult and youth hockey programs.
Cantiague Park in Hicksville, NY, is a home to recreational skaters and hockey teams alike. The rink has also played host to Olympic gold medalists such as Nancy Kerrigan, who performed there in 2004. Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center in Bethpage Community Park is open year round and boasts a state-of-the-art facility. Freeport Recreation Center Ice Rink is located in Freeport and has public skating sessions, lessons, party packages, and a youth hockey league. Andrew Stergiopoulos Ice Rink is located in Great Neck, in the Parkwood Sports Complex. It is a renovated indoor rink with an outdoor chilly feel. The rink is home to the Great Neck youth hockey program and offers a skate school, public skating, teen nights, and holiday camps.
