Registration Open for Helen Keller Services for the Blind Long Island Summer Camp

February 27, 2024 by Jennifer Keegan

July 8 – August 9, 2024 @ Long Island University CW Post Campus

Port Washington, NY (Feb. 26, 2024) – Registration is open for the Helen Keller Services for the Blind (HKSB) summer camp, “Camp Helen Keller,” a 5-week day camp experience for children age 4 to 15 who are blind or have low vision, being held this summer, from July 8 to August 9, 2023 at the Long Island University CW Post campus, located at 720 Northern Blvd, Greenvale, NY 11548.

Parents can register their children online at https://www.helenkeller.org/camphelenkeller.

Camp Helen Keller is a summer program created more than 60 years ago for children ages five to fifteen who are blind or have low vision. It is free to attend thanks to funding from generous donors.  Its main goal is to improve participants’ self-esteem, self-confidence, and socialization skills for campers from Nassau, Suffolk, and Queens, who receive free door-to-door transportation.

Campers participate in traditional activities, such as swimming, arts and crafts, music and dance classes, and field trips and technology classes that have been adapted for blind or low vision individuals. The camp is closed out annually with an inspiring variety show filled with singing, dancing, and musical performances by the campers.

Camp counselors are committed to bringing their unique talents to the children. They are specially trained to adapt recreational and social activities to ensure each child’s experience is accessible. The low 3:1 camper-to-counselor ratio means campers receive a high level of personal attention as they engage in activities and make memories that will last a lifetime.
