Told by two rats in a soon-to-be-demolished apartment building, the show reveals how one apartment held generations of dreams, fears, and resilience, layered like the 40 coats of paint on its walls.
Meet Irish families facing discrimination and dangerous labor while building the Brooklyn Bridge, Italian brothers surviving prejudice and the Great Blizzard of 1888, and young Jewish garment workers risking everything during the 1909 Uprising of the 20,000.
Each story showcases the historical moments that helped shape New York City. Layer the Walls invites audiences of all ages to build empathy while reflecting on whose stories get remembered. And when the apartment building comes down, the stories don’t disappear – they’re carried forward by us, long after the curtain falls.
