Thanksgiving is the time of year when we gather as a family to express all that we are grateful for and all the good times yet to come. Help the youngest members of your Long Island family share in the holiday bliss by helping in the kitchen. Here are 10 Kid-Friendly Thanksgiving Recipes that your little helpers will be able to pull together, and will both be proud to feature at your family meal.

  1. Easy Deviled Eggs

Allow your children to carefully peel hardboiled eggs under cold water. Once peeled cut each egg in half length-wise, and scoop out yolk into a small bowl. Mix the yolk with a ripe avocado and a couple of tablespoons of Greek yogurt. Add salt and pepper to taste, and spoon the mixture onto the egg halves. If desired, have your children chop up veggies and sprinkle them on top.

  1. Fruit or Vegetable Kebabs

An easy appetizer to prepare, older children will enjoy cutting up their favorite fruits or vegetables and arranging them on kebabs. For younger children, use pre-cut slices. Popsicle sticks are a safe alternative to sharp store-bought skewers. Serve with homemade veggie dip or yogurt.

  1. Ants on a Log

This is an old classic that is sure to be a hit with adults and children alike! Cut celery into medium-sized pieces and have your children spread almond or peanut butter on top. Use raisins as the “ants” and arrange your finished “logs” on a tray or decorative plate.

  1. Festive Cheese Tray

Use a semi-hard cheese such as cheddar or Gouda; or a semi-soft cheese such as mozzarella. With a dull knife or cookie cutter, have kids cut festive shapes or designs and place them alongside crackers on a platter to serve.

  1. Trail Mix

One of the easiest snacks to prepare is homemade trail mix. Have your children select an assortment of their favorite nuts, seeds, dried fruits and cereals. Use plastic champagne classes or decorative bags to display.

  1. Homemade Bruschetta

Chop up tomatoes, onions, peppers, and avocado; mix and chill. Decorate a tray with Melba toast or crackers to serve alongside your homemade bruschetta.

  1. Pigs in a Blanket

A snack many Long Island parents remember from their childhood, pigs in a blanket are a quick snack that are sure to be a family favorite. Prepare bite-size hot dogs, turkey dogs or veggie sausage. Once prepared, wrap with refrigerated biscuit dough to create the “blanket”. Heat until biscuits are cooked, and serve with your dipping sauce of choice.

  1. Personal Pan Pizza

Using mini-bagels, pita bread, or English muffins, prepare a mini-pizza using tomato sauce and shredded cheese. For an added assortment, scatter chopped veggies on top. Cook until cheese is melted and serve.

  1. Fruit Cornucopias

This is an easy and attractive dessert for even the youngest children to make. Using wax paper, line the insides of waffle cones. Have children arrange pre-washed fruit such as grapes and berries inside the cone, and serve as a healthier option for after supper.

  1. Yogurt Parfaits

A yummy alternative to the classic ice cream sundae, yogurt parfaits are a cinch to make. Fill small jars or clear plastic cups with vanilla yogurt and top with fresh fruit.

Be creative and add your own twist to these recipes. Allowing your children to experiment in the kitchen will encourage them to try new items and discover what they enjoy preparing.
