June 24, 2020 by Jennifer Keegan

June 2020

Rainy days on Long Island can be a real bummer … especially in the summer. Don’t let the weather get you down; we’ve got a list of fun things to do as a family on those long dark days!

#1. Plan a Movie Marathon

There is nothing like snuggling up with your kids, some snacks and a good movie on a rainy day. Make a list of your favorite family movies and hit play. It’s a great day to binge watch and eat some comfort foods. Don’t have any family favorites? Check Disney Plus or Netflix! Here’s a good list if you need help!

#2. Do Some Science

Weird Science anyone? You’d be surprised how many fun experiments you can do with household items. Here are a few suggestions:

  • Tornado in a Jar
  • Milk and Cookies
  • Ice cream in a bag

#3. Do Yoga

Yoga is a great way to keep everyone calm and also burn major energy. It’s important to keep them engaged and moving to burn that energy off so it doesn’t explode. Check out YouTube for some awesome kids yoga videos.

#4. Have a Dance Party

Dance parties are also a great way to burn energy off when you’re stuck inside. And dancing with your kids will make memories for a lifetime! Ask Alexa to play some kids dance music and get moving. Create a competition or play freeze dance. Maybe you can even dress up and pick a theme! Dancing is so much fun for the whole family.

#5 Arts & Crafts

Arts and Crafts are always a good idea. Creating is a great way to keep kids engaged and keep their minds building and growing. Find some old recycling or household items and see what you can create. Need some help? Try these-

  • Craft with Pasta
  • Crafts with Toilet Paper Rolls
  • Painting with Celery

#6. Read & Reflect

Take some time out to read together or separately. Reading expands your brain, vocabulary and imagination. Maybe take time out to read and reflect or journal on what you read.

#7. Build

There is no time like a rainy day to build a pillow fort or a secret town made of boxes and blankets. Search inside the depths of your imagination and see what you can build. Maybe an under the sea castle? Maybe a high tower on a hill? This adventure will keep the kids (and probably dad) busy for hours!

#8. Bake or Cook

Cooking together is a great way to foster life skills and palate expansion. Bring the kids into the kitchen and cook or bake together. Pancakes, tacos and pizza are great starter recipes for kids. Or Bake a cake or cupcakes and get busy decorating! You can even host your very own “Chopped” competition with older kids. Can you imagine what your kids will come up with?

#9. Plan a Game Day

There’s always time for games! Does your family like board games? Or Trivia games? There are so many possibilities! Make the most of the family time and play some games.

#10. Indoor Scavenger Hunt

This is another great way to get them moving! Create an indoor scavenger hunt or find one on Pinterest! Set a timer to make it more fun!

These 10 Activities Can Brighten Any Long Island Rainy Day

So even though we all want the rain to go away so we can go out and play…there’s tons of fun to have inside! Figure out what best fits your family and go have a great rainy day! Pro tip- You can also use these ideas for snow day indoor fun come winter!
